| We spent 74 days in Argentina, Chile & Uruguay and visited most of the classical tourist destinations: Buenos Aires, Misiones, Iguazu, the Andean Northwest, Mendoza, Peninsula Valdez, the Lake District, Southern Patagonia with El Calafate & El Chalten, and Tierra del Fuego.

Hi there!
I'm heading to Argentina next week with two friends. Our itinerary so far includes 2 days each at the beginning and end in Buenos Aires, and a week to play with in the middle. During that week, we definitely want to hit the beach and we were considering a couple of days in Mendoza for a wine tour. I've heard a lot about Punta del Este in Uruguay but am wondering if it's that much better than the beaches in Argentina? We're in our 30s and looking for a fun beach environment with some night life. Is there an area or beach town that is geared more towards our age group rather than families or students? Is Punta del Este much more expensive than Argentina?
As for Mendoza, I haven't read too many detailed posts about the region, but I get the feeling that it might be a bit sleepy there, and a bit far to go for just a couple of days, even if we fly. Not sure how accurate that is. Any and all perspectives are welcome!

hi frank!
so you're heading south to my country!! a friend of yuors contacted me through tagged and told me about your link. so here i am.
it's actually a very short time to get to know some of the cuntry... you'll realise this as soon as you get there... anyway, here goes my opinion: for a beach resort, punta del este is actually another country, as you know, uruguay, and it really is more expensive - and posh - than the argentinian sea side. it's popular because all jet-set people go there, but it can be very similar to pinamar in argentina. this is actually low season for beaches back home, so i think probably the best place and not fsar form BA can be mar del plata. this is a top destination during summer and all through-out the year. in summer it gets awfully crowded, but this time will be OK, i guess. and it always has a fun night life.
mendoza is a bit far away from BA, but it's a really nice place to visit. you'll see a part of the andes mountain range and the highest peak in south america, the 'aconcagua'. mendoza is great for outdoor spors such as hiking, trekking, mountaneering, biking, and the like. i don't know which country you are form, but if you don't get sunlight too often, mendoza will give you the chance!
do ask me any other thing that might pop up or else i can give u my email.
hope u have a great time in argentina! |

I would also like to know if it is better to hire a car to travel? Or is it better to get a tour guide?
Thanks! |

I Frank,
honestly, we do not have much experience about "beach & fun in Argentina". We were backpacking there.
Everyone in Buenos Aires goes to Mar del Plata in summer. There, you will have a big crowd eager to party.
Mendoza is indeed more quiet, but there is a lot to do and discover around. I would not hire a car, because distances in Argentina are huge. Fly between destination if you are short on time.
Cheers
