| Calcata - Italy |
| Submitted by wesmfmm on 2008-12-13 01:55:08 (via travel.webshots.com) |
| Calcata is a comune and town in the Province of Viterbo in the Italian region Latium, located 47 km north of Rome by car, overlooking the valley of Treja river. The grooviest village in Italy, home to a wacky community of about 100 artists, bohemians, aging hippies and New Age types

Oh yeah I have heard some things about this Italian village. It said something about a relic that many said was the foreskin of Jesus was contained in a silver box, which was housed in a church there. Each year, the residents of Calcata would take the box out and have a parade on the Feast of the Circumcision, Jan. 1.
Do you know something about this?
Did you go there for a day trip? Do you know if it is hard to find a hostel there? |

Hola Pablo, thanks for your comment, I have not heard about the parade you are talking about, neither about the relic. My Italian uncle and Dutch aunt do live in the neighbourhood of Calcata, so we went there to just walk around and take a cup of tea. The church was closed on that day same as many galleries. I did not saw any hostel there, many of the people do live at Calcata Nuova, nearby. The whole area has many villages to stay. I have other albums of them at the same site. It's nearby Bracciano Lake (+/- 45 kms from Rome) if you rent a car you can spend the whole week riding around: Anguilara Sabazia, Bracciano, Trevignano Romano, etc... they are all worth!
Have a great day further!

Further information about Calcata: In the 1930s, the hill towns's fortified historic center was condemned by the government for fear that the volcanic cliffs the ancient community was built upon would collapse. Local residents moved to nearby Calcata Nuova. In the 1960s, the emptied historical centre began to be repopulated by artists and hippies who squatted in its medieval stone and masonry structures. Many of the squatters eventually purchased their homes, the government reversed its condemnation order, and the residents of what had become an artistic community began restoring the ancient town. This trend has continued so that today that town boasts a thriving artistic community. The historical centre now includes restaurants, cafes, and art galleries. |
